Grace wishes the lizard wasn't in the other hole. She's never slept this close to anyone who wasn't related to her and she's completely freaked out by the idea. They were already in the middle of nowhere in a cold desert with a big ugly lizard and now she has to sleep in a hole in the sand. This seems like a lot to have to endure without having to sleep next to a man. She's not sure she should say anything about it. Certainly there aren't any other options, much like riding the terrible beast. Instead of saying anything, she simply curls up tightly, keeping very much to herself.

He can tell she's distressed by the way she's tensed up, so he tucks the blanket between them so that she knows he has no design on her. It's not ideal... it's not even good, but it beats laying on the sand under the stars with no protection at all. Closing his eyes, he pillows his head on his arm, and within moments he drifts off.

As he had suspected, the sand cools over the course of the night, but thanks to their mats, they hardly feel that at all. Vincent doesn't move much - his wings prevent that - and he doesn't withdraw the shielding wing from over her. The winds say pretty calm during the night, and he stays asleep. His body isn't used to a rhythm of sleeping and waking when it needs to, so he stays asleep for quite a while. It seems to stay dark here for an inordinately long time, though, so daylight doesn't come in the ten hours it should seem to, for Grace.

It's strange being in a hole in the middle of a desert, but Grace thinks she could handle that. She's trying not to panic about sharing the hole in the ground with Vincent. There's nothing wrong with Vincent, it's just that he's so very close. Grace didn't think she'd be sleeping this close to a man until her wedding day. Although if she had to guess, she wouldn't have figured she'd be sleeping with a man in a hole in the desert and that man would actually be a temporarily mortal angel.

She takes deep breaths and tries to imagine him as her mother and she as a child again. Her mother sharing their bed and protecting her from boogeymen and the monsters under the bed. When she manages to relax, she has to admit that there is something strangely soothing about having the warmth of another body close at hand. And she's glad his wing is protecting her from what's outside the hole. Grace finally gets to sleep, feeling comforted and peaceful.

Grace is used to being to bed and up again in around eight hours, so she wakes up while it is still dark. She's too frightened of the vast cold and darkness outside of the hole to get out of it, so she curls back up beside Vincent and goes back to sleep until it's light.
